I have been looking to consolidating all my routers into one package and I think I found the perfect candidate. It’s name is the apple airport extreme router.
The router can do dual channel and dual frequency and it has gigabit Ethernet ports so it should a lot faster syncing the iTunes library between the laptop and the pc.
I will be able to connect the printer(via USB) to it so I can do printing from the laptop without the need to have the pc turned on.
For $199 and free delivery its a no brainer :).
Hopefully it should arrive before the weekend.
Thrilling, utterly nail biting.
How’s it going. is it all set up now.
Well its been a treat. Using the Airport utility to set it up it was a breeze. Thats on the mac for windows it was another story.
I had to download the airport utility and when you search for airport most of the search returns are for the mac, which didn’t help me much.
Once I downloaded the utility and used it on windows its the same as the mac version. With one difference.
I used the usb printer to the back of the airport extreme and to be able to see the printer in windows I had to download another program. Again on the mac it just worked :P.
Overall very happy with it, so it was worth it in the end.
Thats because it was built FOR the mac. I believe the PC would have been a secondary thought, thats why you had to download and install other programs to do it. They probably mimic the mac OS on the PC.
I bought a Netgear N600 WIRELESS DUAL BAND GIGABIT ROUTER. It works for both my mac, PC and iPhones without any extra effort. Where as the airport was built FOR mac and PC needed some effort. If it were a perfect product it wouldn’t need any effort from the PC side.
The Airport utility is a novel idea but is build for mac and therefore requires special attention on PC.
